Definition

Bring Your Own Device, or BYOD for short, means that employees use private devices for professional purposes. This can create flexibility, but is particularly sensitive when working remotely from abroad.

Personal devices are not automatically insecure. However, they are often less controllable than corporate devices. That's why BYOD needs clear rules in HR Policy, Remote Work Policy and Privacy Policy.

Why the term is relevant for employers

With BYOD, professional and private data can be mixed. Risks arise from missing updates, private apps, device loss, limited control, unclear support rules or data protection limits for monitoring and remote wiping.

In the DACH/EU context, employers should not treat private devices like fully controlled company devices. Monitoring, access to private data and deletion functions are sensitive under labor and data protection law.

Minimum requirements

  • written BYOD policy and voluntary consent where necessary;
  • MDM, containers or separate workspaces;
  • Encryption, access controls and strong authentication;
  • clear rules on updates, support and costs;
  • Deletion concept for company data without access to private content;
  • Differentiation from unmanaged devices;
  • Connection to Cybersecurity for remote work and Data Protection for remote work.

Corporate device, BYOD and unmanaged device

Device type Typical classification
Corporate device Highest controllability, usually preferred for sensitive data.
BYOD with rules Possible if technical and legal boundaries are clearly defined.
Unmanaged device High risk, often not suitable for sensitive remote work cases.
