Definition

A benefit-in-kind or non-cash benefit is an advantage employees receive not as cash salary, but as a service, use right or cost coverage. In German-speaking contexts, related terms include Sachbezug or taxable non-cash advantage.

The tax and social security treatment differs by country. Thresholds, exemptions or reporting duties should therefore not be transferred from one country to another without review.

Why this term is relevant for employers

For workation as an employee benefit, group workations or international benefits, a benefit-in-kind question can arise if the employer pays for accommodation, travel, a workation villa, additional insurance, equipment or other services.

For HR, the key is to document early who pays, who benefits and whether the reason is mainly business-related or private.

Typical checks

  • Who pays for the benefit?
  • Who benefits privately or professionally?
  • Is there a business reason?
  • Is private use possible?
  • Which documentation does Payroll need?
  • Is International Tax Compliance affected?
  • Are social security or payroll affected?

Difference from employee benefits

Employee benefits describe the broader benefit framework. A benefit-in-kind is the possible tax classification of a concrete benefit. Total Rewards Strategy places such benefits in a broader reward model.
